I enjoy reading about the writing life. My bookshelves here in Mexicali are filled with writer biographies. I was happy to see Christian research the emergence of Gonzo journalism of Hunter S. Thompson who brought this writing style to the forefront of the 1960s. Cristian caught both the spirit of the man and his writing. Our reading has never been the same since.
Hunter S Thompson: Riding with Hell’s Angels
Hunter S Thompson was an American gonzo journalist, he also wrote many books, his biggest and best known books were Hell Angels, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. What made him and his writing so popular was that he wrote in “gonzo”which is when the writer is in a first person view, and takes on more of a personal approach to the writing. His writings have made a lasting impact on gonzo journalism and people who looked up to him. ”As things stand now, I am going to be a writer. I'm not sure that I'm going to be a good one or even a self-supporting one, but until the dark thumb of fate presses me to the dust and says 'you are nothing', I will be a writer” (Bisbort). Hunter never let his drug habits, or anything stop him. Hunter wrote what he wanted which separated him from anyone else. There were not a lot of people like him who wanted to be the rebellious person, do things no one wanted to do and speak to people who were different - this was his art .
In the article "Remembering Gonzo Journalism's Founding Father" Elaine Woo spells out Hunter's legacy, and more about his life. Hunter S Thompson was a " gonzo" journalist, he first started to write his own newspaper at age 10,he later wrote for his high school newspaper and then after he got out of the air force he would write for Rolling Stones. Hunter was a very interesting person to say the least, but that is what set him apart from other people, he would have a great influence on a lot of journalists, and people like Joe Rogan and Johnny Depp. Hunter's writing has become known as "gonzo journalism" where the person is writing in a first person view, which he didn't invent but he certainly made it more popular because of how he did it. You can't go without talking about Hunter's drug habits, which is pretty crazy to say the least, for a regular person that will affect them in their daily life, but Hunter it didn't because he loved and was dedicated to writing. When it comes to Hunter that was his thing he was super dedicated to his writing, and some great examples would be when he wrote "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", Hells Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga" and my personal favorite would be "Kingdom of Fear" if you would read his writing you will understand why he is such a great writer. Hunters have and will always have a huge impact on journalism, there will be future journalists who will want to following his footsteps.
A rebel is a person who goes against the norm of what people do or say and go against their government. Someone who is a rebel breaks the rules, dresses differently than everyone else. A rebel is someone who is an outcast of normal society but they don't care about what people think of them because they don't want to be normal. There are different types of rebels, there are ones when a young person rebels against their parents because of chores, there are people who try to stop the government by protesting. When it comes to Hunter he was considered to be the rebel of literature, by the way he was writing, but holding this bad man who doesn't care about who and where he wrote about. An example of Hunter being a rebel would be when he wrote Hell's Angel: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, Hunter spent some time with them, when no one wanted to be around them at all. Hunter loved to be the rebel and carry this rebel image. Hunter Thompson is always going to be known for being a super influential journalist, but yet there is a mystery to what he was thinking. One of Hunter's problems throughout his life was with drugs. He had a routine where he did a lot of drugs, which throughout his life was destroying him and his health. With all his bad heath it lead to his suicide, it doesn’t all have to be due to the drugs but yet was a big role. Hunter had written a book Hell’s Angel: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gang where we interviewed them, talked to them and drank with them. After we had published it grew and the hells angels had confronted Hunter on live television. As Hunter started his career he wanted his career to grow and his writings to get out more, during that time there wasn’t any internet so it was harder. Hunter had written his biggest book of his career which was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is what made him well known and ultimately made more people want him to write for their company.
