For her community profile, Laneesah returns to a place she knows all too well. She describes the influence of gang life in her childhood home of Los Angeles. Her writing reflects a complex relationship with her father. Even though the gangs dominated much of his existence, he did his best to protect his family from the relentless violence. Laneesah didn’t know much of her father’s past until she decided to interview him for this assignment. She hopes the details of gang life she uncovers in her conversations with her father will open people’s eyes to a hard reality.
