The first week of the semester I ask students to write an essay about an impactful decision they have made in their life. Cause and Effect. I encourage them to go beyond the “what” of their experience and analyze the “why” of it all. They explore the reasons behind their thinking. They examine the change in their lives. In his essay about joining the military, Alex writes with a greater purpose. He is not thinking about himself. He is thinking about friends, family, and others. He has committed to sacrifice, so others don’t have to.
