I work on several campuses where you can see workers toiling in the fields right outside our classroom windows. Many of my students come from farmworker families, so writing about Cesar Chavez is an exciting proposition. His stance on education is the reason many of them are in class. Understanding and comprehension often depends more on what is located behind the eyes than what is in front of them. Our students have rich and meaningful ideas experiences that we need to tap into. Below, Gala G. Leon writes of Cesar’s leadership a long, tough strike against the grape industry. For his union, he demanded better pay and working conditions. However, it was a difficult road. His farmworkers were poor. The growers were rich. Gala’s writing delves beyond the politics and money. She focuses upon the people. She writes about sacrifice.
