In English 009, I encourage my students to contribute a song to our reading of Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted. We break down and analyze the lyrics. We choose a scene from the book where the music best fits. Of all the songs that I hear in my head when I read this memoir, I nominate Pink Floyd’s “See Emily Play.” I love the song and the lyrics, but more importantly, if feel the songwriter Syd Barrett probably knows a lot more about Susanna than we do.
