My English students like to write about Dead Marilyn. She died in 1962, but my students try to explain why we still care so much for her 50 years later. They write about her art, her fame, and her sadness. So, I hope they like this poem by Sharon Olds: “The Death of Marilyn Monroe.” In the fall, I’m teaching three literature classes, and I’m already putting together my assignments. I’m planning a series I call “Jay’s Sad Poem of the Week.” Stay tuned for Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinsen, Robert Frost. If my students like Marilyn, they are going to love Anne Sexton….)
Here Sharon Olds inspired me to write about the story behind the poem. I hope her poem will have the same effect on my students.
